Star Wars: the Making Of

“A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away…”

We all know this famous sentence that still today delights us and brings us memories of our childhood. We always liked imagining and representing interstellar travels. We did it with pencils before, we do it in 3D now.

In this post we will show you how to get a ticket for a planet under Empire invasion.

Assets preparation

After a first conceptual phase and reference gathering, we modeled the basic terrain with the sculpting tool of Cinema 4D.

Once the basic surface is ready, we manually distributed the vegetation, choosen among different catalogs of Maxtree and Megascan.

Once we had the planet generated, we only needed to populate it  and did it with the help of conveniently re-textured models from 3D Warehouse and Sketchfab.

Rigging of Darth Vader

A funny step of the process was the modification of the posture of the characters: through the web page mixamo a rig of the stormtrooper and Lord Vader were performed to obtain the more ideal posture for the image that we wanted to achieve.

Study of the lighting

The ability of outlining a tale and hide it in a render is the most important goal for a  3D artist. The so called “story telling” awakes in the viewer and the image some kind of empathy lead through the light. Changing lighting conditions can suggest a different interpretation of the events. That’s why we decided to represent the same scene with two different light conditions and let you tell the story you prefer.
