Te Papa Museum Wellington

Im August 2006

The new addition is designed to manifest itself with the necessary forcefulness to have a real effect as a cultural marker. The extension serves as an open and inviting gesture towards the green heart of Waitangi Park by way of two outstretched wings which cantilever upwards. The two wings are dedicated to exhibiting contemporary art from various cultural backgrounds. In opposition to a traditional gallery-organization, the museum provides fluent sequences of zigzagging spaces, accessed via slowly spiralling ramps, with large communicative zones in between. In addition to facilitating a face-to-face experience of the exhibits, these plateaus allow visitors to perceive sculptures and paintings from different heights, angles and positions, whilst also creating distinctive stage-like spaces for vernissages and small concerts.
